Bauhaus inspired design:

Original design inspired by the Bauhaus movement

In Layman’s terms, Bauhaus as a movement is an art form focusing on the beauty of simplicity and shape. Deriving from a German art school of the same name (from 1919 to 1933), it has been a key staple of design influence until the present day, and its design was birthed from themes that were relevant to the time, for instance the worries of art in its entirety losing relevance and appreciation in favour of modern production. It incorporates the use of block colour, raw tonal colour, geometry, shape, pattern and illustration, resulting in bold, outstanding designs and graphic fine art.

Above is a Bauhaus inspired design I created in the software ‘Clip Studio Paint Pro’ (copyright Celsys). I utilised some of the Bauhaus style’s signature design aesthetics in order to create my own piece. One aesthetic I incorporated was the grainy style colour gradients and shading often seen in tonal pieces, and another is the use of perfect geometric shapes, like the diagonal adjacent lines to the left side and the two thin ellipses to the right side. I also believe the colours I used are quite Bauhaus-esque, being bold but not too jarring, and enticing.

Bellow I have included some photographs of the University of Hull campus that I believe may have been inspired by the Bauhaus art movement. The geometry, form and aesthetic of Bauhaus art can be found in modern architecture, giving structures a clean, sharp and interesting appearance. It also emits and reflects the professionalism, artistry and contemporaneousness to be found within the building, just like the University of Hull and the school of Bauhaus: both places of education and mental evolution.
